So are we about to see a new era in the sport of Mercedes dominance? No-one really knows, as yet, how the cards will fall in the current F1 season; one which has witnessed sweeping changes to the technical specifications required of the cars. The first Grands Prix of the season were always going to see a few anomalies being thrown up – so it will be fascinating to see who’s in pole position once things settle down a little.

But if the Malaysian Grand Prix is anything to go by, Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton are leading the way. Hamilton completely dominated the race, finishing well ahead of his Mercedes team-mate, Nico Rosberg. Hamilton successfully converted his qualifying in pole – leading from the very first corner and completely controlling the Grand Prix from start to finish.
Rosberg couldn’t stay in touch, so concentrated on maintaining second and seeing off the challenge of Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel.
Pre-season, Vettel was hot favourite to win his fifth consecutive Formula One World Drivers' Championship, but now Hamilton has been installed as favourite with Betfair, the world's biggest gambling exchange at around even money. His teammate Nico Rosberg is now also ahead of Vettel in the betting for the Formula One drivers’ championship, at 5-2, with the German now around 3-1.
This is a big shift in the market and seems to suggest that Mercedes’ technician have got to grips better and more quickly with Formula One’s new technical requirements than rivals Red Bull.
Time will tell, but Mercedes are already odds-on to win the Formula one – constructors’ championship.
