Showcasing Jeep - A 4x4 Classic

The Jeep is well and truly a 4x4 classic and is still cool today as ever whilst being traditional, even historical, from it's use in the military during World War II to featuring in TV shows and blockbuster movies. The Jeep has starred in Jurassic Park, Jukes of Hazard, Tomb Raider, Twister, Tremors and Indiana Jones to name just a few. If James Bond can drive one in the movie Octopussy, then hey, it must be cool right?

In the below gallery of over 100 pictures of Jeeps, we combine the cool with the crazy along with some very smart modified Jeeps along with some photos of Jeeps in interesting places around the World. There are so many different types and styles of Jeep - just look at the Jeep Wikipedia page and you will see all the different models that were built, it's pretty impressive reading.

Jeeps On The Big Screen

So we start with the big screen and here are just some of the movies that Jeeps have been featured in:

Probably the most famous Jeep from any movie to date, the Jeep in Jurassic Park.
Darma Initiative Jeep CJ from LOST (not a movie, a series i know, just thought it deserved a mention)
CJ-7 in the end of Terminator that Sarah Connor drives
Tomb Raider....this movie was when I first spotted the Jeep Rubicon....and Angelina Jolie.
It was a good day.
Tremors...Classic!
Jeep chasing tornadoes in the movie Twister
Jeeps chasing in James Bond movie Octopussy
Sorry, i could only find this Lego image of Indiana Jones and his Jeep!
Jessica Simpson in Dukes of Hazard
Jeep in the movie Sahara
If you want to see more Jeeps featured in the movies, they are all on the  Internet Movie Cars Database - this website is truly amazing, if you're a geek like me!

Jeep History

The history of the Jeep goes back to the first Willys MB Jeeps which were produced in 1941 which are considered the iconic World War II Jeep, and inspired many similar light utility vehicles.

Over the years, the World War II Jeep later evolved into the "CJ" civilian Jeep.

It’s interesting reading into how the name Jeep was derived as there are so many different versions. The most widely accepted theory is that the military designation GP (for Government Purposes or General Purpose) was slurred into the word Jeep. Joe Frazer, Willys-Overland President from 1939-1944, claimed to have coined the word jeep by slurring the initials G.P.

Owning a Jeep

Owning a Jeep is a lot of fun, especially for going off-road. The Wrangler is the most popular Jeep, especially here in the UK and is definitely a "no frills" vehicle. It comes with very few "extras", and some of the most basic things (carpet, steel doors, rear seat) are considered options. There are some great places on the web where you can get Jeep accessories. In the UK there is Bestop Jeep Accessories which is a good website to use, especially for Jeep Wrangler accessories. If you're thinking of buying a second hand Jeep then check out Ebay and Auto Trader for a good starting places.

Jeep Slogans

  • The Sun Never Sets On The Mighty Jeep
  • The toughest 4 letter word on wheels
  • Have Fun Out There
  • If it's not trail rated, it's not a jeep 4x4
  • Only in a Jeep
  • Jeep. There's Only One
  • Go Anywhere, Do Anything
  • There's Only One
  • Honk if parts fall off
  • My Jeep is not an SUV and your SUV is not a Jeep
  • Where the road ends, the fun begins
  • Built not Bought
  • Jeep Naked
  • Eat, Sleep, Jeep

And some of these i'm pretty sure aren't official...but they're good so what the heck:

  • My Jeep won a war, your Honda mowed my lawn
  • God invented pavement so yuppies could go 4 wheeling
  • The chrome don't get you home

Celebrities and their Jeeps

Here's just a little selection of celebrities photographed with Jeeps over the years.

Steve Mcqueen
Beyonce and Jay Z
David Beckham
One of our favourite Jeeps is that of Tony Hawk. He auctioned this amazing DUB Edition 2008 4-Door Jeep Wrangler to TonyHawkFoundation.org and the proceeds went to fund public skateparks in low income areas.

And finally....

the award for craziest Jeep goes to....

The Hafner Rotabuggy

The Hafner Rotabuggy was a British flying Jeep. It was an experimental aircraft that was essentially a Willys MB Jeep combined with a rotor kite, which was developed for the war with the intention of producing a way of air-dropping off-road vehicles. A replica of the Rotabuggy can be found at the Museum of Army Flying
