Cargo size
Pick-up trucks differ in sizes, with full-sized ones able to carry much more in the cargo bed than small pickups, as well as having better towing capabilities. However, a compact pick-up is more likely to save you money on fuel and the initial purchase price. You will need to think about what you're planning on using your new vehicle for before going for the first one you like the look of.
Seating
Just as the cargo bay varies in size, the cabin area also comes in different sizes and seating arrangements. The regular type of pick-up only offers a small amount of storage up front and doesn't offer rear seating. In an extended cab, you’re likely to find two smaller seats behind the front seats, which can be handy if you've got a family.
A small pick-up truck will usually feature a four-cylinder engine, which also happens to be the most economical. You might have the option to increase the engine size to a five or six cylinder, which offers a smoother ride and increased towing capability.
4WD v 2WD
If you're planning on driving off-road or in extreme weather, you'll be looking for a pick-up with four-wheel drive. This is probably the most popular option, but front-wheel drive is preferred if you don't expect to be going off the tarmac anytime soon, whilst also being a less expensive option.
Towing
Pick-up trucks tend to have two main purposes: transporting cargo and towing. If you will be using your vehicle for towing, take a look at the maximum capacity.
Smaller trucks often have much lower limits than large pick-ups so make sure you check the specific model. Bear in mind that towing packages are often additional to the standard price.
Safety
Any new vehicle should be equipped with the latest safety requirements, but a couple of things to look out for are driver and passenger airbags, three-point seatbelts, child-proof locks and a Thatcham-approved security alarm.
