The Nissan Qashqai
The Nissan Qashqai offers everything a family needs and wraps it up in a chunky and attractively designed exterior package. It’s been a top seller since it was first launched in the UK and families on the move just can’t get enough of its practical charm and fuel-frugal nature. Even a used Nissan Qashqai will command a strong price on the used car market.
The Qashqai is a difficult car to describe, but something like a hatchback on stilts might be a good place to start. It sits on slightly raised suspension and has a fairly traditional five-door hatchback shape; albeit a hatchback with a taller roofline for an airier feeling inside. But, it’s the chunky off-roader styling that buyers love. It might not be anymore suited to mud-plugging than your average family car, but it looks like it can handle itself all the better on our tough city streets.
The Nissan Juke
Too many Qashqai’s on the street for you to feel like an individual? Then why not take a closer look at the Qashqai’s groovy cousin, the Juke. It’s got almost everything the Qashqai has to offer – just a little smaller inside and out – but it’s styled like some sort of 1970s off-road buggy! But, like the Qashqai, it won’t thank you for taking it off-road as it is really just a re-engineered hatchback, with some pretty funky styling.
Like the Qashqai, the Juke gets everything from a fuel economy and safety point of view that Nissan could through at it, so just because it looks like a 4x4, don’t go worrying that it is some kind of gas guzzling hangover from the 1990s. In fact, the Juke is just a front-wheel drive hatchback that’s had a serious styling makeover and should be just about as frugal as your average hatchback.
The Ford B-Max
The Ford B-Max is a very interesting new family car proposition from the famous blue oval brand that might not be as funky styled as the Nissan Juke, but is designed to be just so practical and frugal that you might just love it for these attractive qualities alone. It’s got all the space and cunning little cubbyholes that a family could need, but thanks to its fantastic Fiesta underpinnings, it’s also a great car to drive once the kids are dropped off. The most notably B-Max point of interest is its twin sliding doors; one on each side.
These neatly engineered apertures open up wide, and flat to the body, to reveal an opening that’s much wider than your average open-out door. This cunning door operation makes opening the doors much easier in those tight car park situations, as well as meaning that difficult and heavy loads, such as a baby in a travel cot, can be much easier loaded into the side of the B-Max. Couple to this a very versatile folding and removable seating system and you have a stylish and practical small family car that can carry much larger loads than its exterior size would suggest.
